The history of Palembang city

Established June 16th in 683 AD (605 Saka) by Dapunta Hyang based Kedukan Bukit inscription inscribed Pallawa and ancient Malay language. It is the oldest city in Indonesia.

 

Stages of growth phase Palembang

 

·         Kingdom of  Sriwijaya era
     Palembang had ever been the center of the kingdom of Sriwijaya but it is also a trade center between countries  through China Sea and the Strait of Malacca. It is also as a center of Buddhist religion reinforced by the inscription of Dewapaladewa. The inscription was found in Napalanda (India) which said that the King of Sriwijaya was Balaputradewa derived from Swarnadwipa and make an Abbey. Even the construction of Borobudur is inseparable from the support of the king of Sriwijaya. History relics of this period , among others, is the Kingdom of Sriwijaya and Bukit Siguntang site.

 

·         Palembang Sultanate era

Since the collapse of Sriwijaya kingdom in the 13th up to -16 century, Palembang is controlled Hindu who is subject to the kingdom of Majapahit. Process and the establishment of the Islamic empire entry in Palembang related to the development of Islam in Java. It is along with the collapse of the Majapahit kingdom. Aria Damar (Ario Dillah), a king of Palembang, is a person who contributed to fostering Raden Fatah (the son of the King of Majapahit who was born in Palembang) was defeated King Giridrawrdhana. He was established the kingdom of Demak.
Succession occurred in the Sultanate of Demak. The result was group of nobles did an emigration to Palembang led by Ki Gede Ing Suro, who in 1552 founded the Palembang Darussalam Sultanate. The area of it is Batanghari sembilan region that included South Sumatra, Bangka Belitung, Jambi, Lampung and Bengkulu.

      Palembang Darussalam Sultanate set Islam as the foundation of the State, and the scholars get a very high position. The proved is the scholars buried in a complex with the Sultan of Palembang like in graveyard of Tekurep Tengkurep and Cinde Walang. The reign of Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin Jayo Wikramo (SMB) in the first Sultanate center is in Kuto Gawang. In 1737, during the reign of Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin Jayo Wikramo was built keratin Lama on the banks of the Musi River.

Resistance against the Dutch was directly led by Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II (named Raden Hasan) by ordering the expulsion and demolition lodge of the Dutch on the Aur River. Dutch use sneaky way capturing SMB II in 1821. It happened when SMB II was invited to negotiate. But he was taken to Batavia and finally died on November 22nd, 1852 in Ternate, his place of exile.

Sultanate office in Palembang transferred to the SMB II’s nephew, King Anom, was title Sultan Ahmad Najamuddin IV. Last Sultan Palembang rebelled against Dutch. He was finally caught in 1825 and exiled to Manado in 1841. It marked the end of the Sultanate of Palembang.

·         The pre-independence era

In the colonial era, South Sumatra is known as a source of oil which is the main income of the Dutch for development of oil refinery like oil refinery in Plaju which began operating in 1900 and oil refinery in Gerong River which was completed in 1926. The building relics of Dutch still exist is the Mayor's Office, JHS 1, Building of Jacobsen VD Berg, Musi Hotel (BKD office), BP7 Building, Ayam Curch and others.
On April 1st 1906, the Dutch colonial government set Palembang as a city. During the Japanese occupation is only a few bunkers protection, it is actually a Japanese army's own needs.
On August 22nd, 1945 news of freedom to Palembang and directly distributed by Dr. A.K. Gani once declared Palembang as a part of the RI. The Dutch wants to return getting power, triggering the resistance of the people of Palembang which is famous for fighting five days and five nights in the city center.
